Connection check

You can use spreed conference even with a modem or ISDN connection. spreed video conferencing and screen sharing features requires broadband Internet.

We highly recommend using the spreed connection test to determine the current Internet speed that can be used with spreed conferencing. spreed's bandwidth requirements are fairly conservative. spreed meetings with VoIP can be held even over modem or slow satellite connections. In case your Internet connection is too slow to use spreed conferencing with video and/or audio you can disable video and audio at anytime.

How the spreed connection test works

The spreed spreed test will check the connection between your desktop and the spreed server and the quality (spreed and latency/delay) of your Internet connection. The use of spreed for conference type Meeting with video requires a minimum of 120 kbit/s upstream bandwidth (from your desktop to the Internet) and 120 kbit/s times the number of participants-1 with audio/video for downstream bandwidth (from the Internet to your desktop). The conference types Instant Meeting and Broadcast requires less bandwidth on the participant side: the recommended downstream bandwidth is 120 kbit/s times the number of presenters (if audio and video is enabled), the upstream bandwidth is negligible (about 1 kbit/s).

The spreed connection test will take approx. 90 seconds.

Firewall settings

With some firewall settings the communication between your desktop and the server goes through a "HTTP proxy" server. Depending on your available Internet bandwidth and the speed of the Proxy server, audio and video can be delayed. If the latency (the delay) is higher than 200ms you should speak with your system administrator to enable TCP port 1935 (outgoing only) to let spreed communicating faster. In rare cases "stateful firewalls" may interrupt the spreed connection after some amount of data has been transferred. Contact your system administrator in this case.

Note:
The spreed connection test does not measure the general file up- and download speed. The displayed connection speed is the usable bandwidth for spreed. The spreed client uses only a part of your available CPU and Internet bandwidth resources. It is recommended that your participants check once their Internet connection prior to participate a spreed web conference.
